For me, it was the charge at Pelannor Fields that got to me. I remember seeing that in the theater and I could feel the impact.
The meme of the man, the two fantasies....yeah. Having been raised by a mouth-foaming wimmin libber, I feel that meme. I was raised to be the second man, begging for approval and acceptance from a stronger woman. Much too late in my life I realized the damage it had done to me, crippling even.
Thank you for sharing this insight from your personal experience. The time of greatest instability is when the old order unravels and we haven’t yet worked out how to rebuild a new order.
Obviously I am not pro Jordan Peterson, but the guy fucking cares. He breaks down crying constantly thinking about the poor men and their shitty lives. I feel the same way when I think of all the middle-class writers out there just trying to write their books as well as possible, not knowing how hard the industry is stacked against them. JP has picked his side, and he's picked his solution, and I kinda respect that.
I cry when someone I love dies, and I cry when my daughter makes me proud, but I always cry when I watch each of the LOTR films. For pretty much the reasons you’ve stated. I can relate to a lot of what you’ve said here, even if I do think Peterson is a bit of a charlatan and an idealogue. Hate watching his videos actually did push me slightly off the well worn leftist track, even though I didn’t agree with him a lot of the time. His message resonated with young men for a reason, and the sneering contempt of liberals for him I found a little pointless. I too have struggled with a lot of the things you mentioned here. For me, writing gives me a way to make meaning of it all. I think I would gravitate more towards Victor Frankl in that regard than Peterson, but to each their own. Martial arts has really helped me grapple with some of this stuff too. I hope you keep writing and figuring this stuff out, I enjoyed your piece.
Glad it resonated with you! And yeah, I think Peterson is a grifter FWIW, but it was more of an "any port in a storm" for me at that point in my life. I will check out Victor Frankl, thanks!

It is a very fine line to walk at times, to be sure
"If this is to be the end, make it such an end!"
You can die on your feet or you can die on your knees, but you will die. Will you live?

There is definitely something to be said for picking a side and sticking with it and being consistent in your conviction.
Sounds quite pro-Jordan Peterson to me. Good point too.
